Why we like this
- Limalimo is regularly voted one of the best hotels in Ethiopia - a simple yet luxurious place to stay that exemplifies responsible tourism, without scrimping on the important bits.
- The hotel is perched on a escarpment offering stunning views for miles and miles.
- It’s the perfect place to explore the Simien mountains and see the amazing wildlife within. Head into the mountains for day trips, or use the comfort of the lodge to prepare for, or recover from, a night or two under the stars in the campsites.
- The hotel is deeply committed to the environment and the local community and was built for and offers unassuming luxury in a simple, sensitive and thoughtful manner
Limalimo is a gateway to the Simiens, with many different activities on hand both in the hotel and beyond in the park. Set off on full or partial day treks with a private guide. If you’re feeling more adventurous, you can camp out under the stars in some of the local camp sites, supported by a team of guides, cooks and porters.
Whether you’re a keen birder, or would love to see the Gelada monkeys or some of the rarer animals of the park, Limalimo is a fabulous base from which to explore the mountains. At Brilliant, we also love the chance to visit the villages - particularly Limalimo village nearby - and experience a coffee ceremony, or spend some time here on the roof of Africa. Picnic lunches, breakfasts in amazing spots and other treats can be organised as you need.
Opened in 2015 and with just 12 rooms, Limalimo lodge has quickly become one of the best hotels in Ethiopia, and is often booked out many months in advance. Fortunately for you, they’re building more and also their service is improving all the time as they host more and more happy visitors. Whilst Ethiopia often struggles to provide ‘world-class’ accommodation, Limalimo is one of the few that deserves its reputation.
Limalimo is 10 mins drive from Debark and is perched on the edge of an escarpment, offering extraordinary views of the Simiens National park and is a glorious base from which to experience and explore the majesty of the Simiens. Built with the environment in mind, with rammed earth and thatch, the hotel blends into the landscape. Rooms are simple, offering a blend of Ethiopian design and contemporary finishes.
There is a restaurant and bar, with a terrace that overlooks the Simiens. The meals use local ingredients that are, where possible, sourced from local suppliers. The food is great and there is a good mixture of local cuisine (more injera, yay!) and Western dishes in case you’re in need. If you feel like pushing the boat out, Champagne breakfasts might just make someone’s day.
Do spend time a the fire pit if you want to spend time outside with a view of the extraordinary stars (the Simiens are renowned for their excellent star-gazing) or guests can also indulge in one of the regular yoga sessions or receive a massage.

Limalimo is a fantastic example of the best of tourism. Conceived by local guides, built by people from the Simien park and incorporating many of the best architectural elements - it manages to be one of the best hotels in Ethiopia whilst also being sensitive to the delicate local environment and employing many local staff. Local materials were used to build the lodge, energy comes from renewable sources and wastewater is reused.
Why we like this
- Famed for being the highest hotel in Africa at 3260m, the Simien Lodge has long been one of the better places to stay in Ethiopia
- Excellent views and a chance to spend time with the Gelada Monkeys and wildlife that often hang out around the hotel
- Use the hotel as a base for trekking, exploring and experiencing the majesty of the Simien National Park
- The only hotel inside the Simien Park, with easy access to viewpoints like Imet Gogo
- Built and run with sensitivity for the local environment and communities and continues to support the local people with involvement in a number of projects
Inside the park, the Simien Lodge is a wonderful place from which to explore the park. From the hotel, you can organise day trips to visit some of the wonderful viewpoints here in the Roof of Africa. Knowledgeable local guides will take you out for treks to see some of the vistas and the parks flora and fauna, whether sitting with Gelada monkeys, or hunting the elusive Ethiopian wolf.
Depending on your mobility, different treks can be organised as well as visits to the local villages for a coffee ceremony, or simply to experience life at its simplest, as well as a walk to a local monastery. The Simien lodge is also a fantastic place to depart for, or arrive from a few nights spent in the park. All camping equipment, food and guides can be arranged from the hotel. Brilliant Ethiopia will ensure this is booked with the right operators, as quality can vary wildly!
In addition to heading off on foot, mountain bikes are available for hire from the lodge or you can organise transport to different parts of the park.
The Simien Lodge is the only hotel inside the Simien park 40 minutes drive from Debark and, until the arrival of Limalimo, was the best hotel in the region. Comfortable and with good facilities, the Simien lodge is a great base to explore the region. Like many Ethiopian hotels, its is a little expensive and standards aren’t quite ‘world-class’ but it is an extremely comfortable and beautiful place to spend some time - these are the only two hotels we would recommend in the region.
Built just beneath the escarpment edge for environmental reasons (although this does mean the views aren’t as good as they could be), the lodge is discreet, blending into the local environment and the views are still fabulous. Better this way than leaving an eyesore on the horizon from miles around.
There are 24 rooms, consisting of ‘Tukels’ which are two, connected circular rooms. All rooms come with underfloor heating by solar, which is helpful given it can get chilly at night. All rooms have Ethiopian decorations and there are the usual facilities like tea and coffee, a safe and full-length mirrors. The rooms are clustered together, so do ask for one of the rooms at the edges, where you’ll get a better view from your balcony.
The bar and restaurant, famed along with the hotel as ‘the highest in Africa’ is a great place to relax with a roaring fire set in the middle, and a good mixture of Ethiopian and Western food.
