Major regions in Ethiopia

From a tourist perspective, there are 4 major regions in Ethiopia:

The northern circuit includes the towns of Bahir Dar, Gonder, Axum, and Lalibela, as well as the Simien Mountains National Park, Lake Tana, the Gheralta Mountains and often the highland community trekking

In the Danakil Depression you'll find the volcanoes of Erta Ale and Dallol, as well as the Danakil salt lakes. Mekele is the base town for expeditions into the Danakil.

The Rift Valley includes the lakes Ziway, Langano, Abijatta-Shalla, Abaya and Chamo

The Omo Valley, in the deep southwest of Ethiopia, is a fascinating tribal region very much cut off from the rest of the country. Arba Minch is the gateway town to the Omo Valley.

Beyond the 4, easy-to-categorise routes and regions, there are a number of other popular travel destinations dotted around the country. These include the Bale Mountains National Park, Harar, and in the wild west, Gambella National Park.

Addis Ababa, the capital city of Ethiopia, will be your first encounter with Ethiopia as it contains the only international airport in the country. Most visitors spend a day or two at the start or end of their journey exploring Addis.
